Founded as a local apothecary in 1792, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is one of the oldest surviving pharmacies in the United States. Even today, the shop-turned-museum holds a vast collection of pharmacy-related items like hand-blown medicine bottles and drug mills, with most dating from the early 1900s around the time the shop closed up due to the economic woes of the Great Depression. There are even documents and records on display from older eras of the shop, including lists with customers like Martha Washington and James Monroe named. Visitors can learn about various past medical practices and medicines, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the importance of such town practices. Situated in Old Town, the museum is a few blocks west of Waterfront Park and quite near the Athenaeum.
