Fort Ward is a beautifully maintained offshoot of the network of Union structures built to protect Washington, D.C. during the Civil War. It's located within a scenic park about six miles south of the Capitol. Visitors to the fort can conduct research at the Dorothy C.S. Starr Library, tour the fort's quarters and underground bombproofs, or drop by the museum, home to many Civil War period objects.
