Built around and on top of a centuries-old city, Alexandria is home to numerous historic sites and items, some discovered and some well-hidden under streets, buildings and fields. At the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, some of the items found during excavations in the city limits are on display, with a total collection of over two million artifacts recorded in the museum logs. This vast collection of materials helps illuminate the ways of life in Alexandria all the way back into the 17th century, and the rotating selection of exhibitions within the museum bring into focus various parts of this long and intricate local history. The museum is contained within the Torpedo Factory Art Center right along the river by Waterfront Park, close to the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum and a number of wonderful Old Town restaurants.
