Built in 1785 in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, the residence that is now the Lee-Fendall House Museum first acted as a home for relatives of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee, though this most famous of the clan never lived there. Over the centuries the home has existed, it has served as a place for Union soldiers to heal from their wounds, home the well-known Alexandria Downham family and the home of 20th century labor leader John L. Lewis. Now, the historic home has been returned to how it appeared in early Victorian times, around the mid-19th century. and antique decorative arts and other household items help put the home in its historical context, as does the beautiful Victorian garden that surrounds the large home. Other nearby Old Town attractions include the Gadsby's Tavern Museum, the Torpedo Factory Art Center and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum.
