Once the Virginia plantation of George Washington, the nation's first president, Mount Vernon is now America's most visited historic estate, consisting of 20 different buildings, 50 acres of gardens, a museum, the tombs of George and Martha Washington, a memorial to 18th-century slaves and much more. It lies on 500 scenic acres set 16 miles south of Washington D.C. right on the banks of the Potomac River.
